City of Ballarat says the North Garden Wetlands were built in 2001 to help purify stormwater before it enters Lake Wendouree. The source describes the wetlands as a nature sanctuary with habitat for local fauna and flora, and as a popular spot for viewing birds and rakali. Pedestrian access is listed from Gregory Street, Wendouree Parade or Zoo Drive in North Gardens Reserve, making it a useful quieter outdoor stop beside the Botanical Gardens and lake loop.
